Things To Know About Granite Counter Tops

Like with anything in life you should know as much as you can about granite counter tops as you do with things like your car. The reason why you should know as much about granite counter tops as with anything else is because they are expensive enough to make you take care of them in a way you wouldn’t ordinarily think of.

The first thing you need to know about granite counter tops is they need to be maintained regularly in order for them to keep their shine and last as long as they should. What most people don’t understand is not cleaning the counters as often as every other day will ensure that dust builds up on the surface and causes the granite to look dull and discolored. What I suggest doing is to wipe down the counters every single day and every other day use a good granite cleaner in order to get the counter to shine like it normally would.

The next thing you need to know about granite counter tops is that you should never use a knife on the top of one and the reason is not because you will scratch the granite because odds are you won’t but the reason is because the sealer will start to come off. What most people don’t know is that over every piece of granite is a seal coat that helps protect the granite and gives it it’s shine. Once there is a slit or scratch in the sealer coat it will start to break itself off and this will cause the entire seal to eventually come off making the granite permanently dull looking and prone to breaking.

As you may already know granite is not the hardest stone out there and because of this it will break if you are not careful. Something I suggest doing is placing counters underneath the granite because even the smallest gap could cause the granite to weaken from the sun and eventually crack. Just make sure that you have counters under the granite counter top because the more support that it has the longer it will last.
